Bird watching in Karla Lake

Pelion houses around 14 ecological habitats. According to Natura 2000 a dense beech forest (Fagus sylvatica) with outstanding forest structure and state of preservation covers the heart of the mountain range, and at the same time is the pre-dominant vegetation in the high altitude of the region. There are also forest formations with aspens ( Populus Tremula )and sallow (Salix caprea). The vegetation that thrives here comprises mainly of fruit trees such as apple, pear, cherry and peach trees, walnut and almond trees, as well as kiwi trees in recent years. In the area vineyards and olive groves can also be found. Lake Karla has evolved into an important ornithological destination. Especially in autumn and spring (migration), when countless birds arrive around the lake, the number of visitors with ornithological interests in Thessaly increases significantly every year. In the lake`s surroundings so far more than 200 different bird species have been recorded. According to the data of the Hellenic Ornithological Society, which are collected every year mid-January in the most important wetlands in Greece, more than 22,700 birds were counted in Lake Karla. This Wetland is the fourth largest waterfowl habitat in Greece after Amvrakikos Gulf, Evros River Delta and the lagoon at Mesolongi. As stated by other scientists 128 different bird species have been recorded at Karla Lake, 75 of which are listed under paragraph 1 of the EEC Directive 79/409 / ΕEC. And 106 of them migrato-ry. In the past, a significant fish population also resided in Karla that every year produced 600 tons of fish and secured jobs for around 1,000 inhabit-ants of the surrounding area. Carp, roach and Gable are the species that can still be found in the lake. Cormorants, coots and mallard are some of the waterfowl species wintering at Karla Lake. One of the families that perceive Carla as their home is the family Heron (Ardeidae) which belongs to the class of Ciconiiformes (Ciconiiformes) and includes 24 Genera. In which herons belong. We meet 1000 heron couples with 7 different species. The Pelicans also began to appear in the reservoir of Karla in autumn 2013. Since then, their numbers (White Pelican is a globally endangered species) began to continuously rise, resulting to the climax of 550 birds in the fall of 2014. Thus, Carla, be-came the third in line known colony of White Pelican in Southeast Europe after the Danube Delta and Little Prespa. Finally, tourists will be pleasantly surprised with the fact that in the villages around the lake more than 600 kestrels have been recorded (Falco naumanni), which are migratory hawks that nest exclusively in buildings. In the protection of this also threatened species aims LIFE + Nature: "Conservation and management of kestrels in three Special Protection Areas (SPAs) of Greece.
